I have a different take on this.  The abuse happened, it happened to a person that voluntarily accepted celebritydom.  The photos were entered into public domain.  The person in the picture is now not only hanging out with the abuser, but also starting verbal confrontations with the abuser’s current girlfriend.  Had these current events involving the abuser/abused not happened the abuse would not be a poignant thing to illustrate at this time, thus it wouldn’t be in the storefront.
From my standpoint it’s completely valid, because her current behavior towards the abuser mirrors that of other abused women and frankly many abused women won’t seek professional help so that they can learn about these disturbing facts and more to prepare themselves for feelings that will eventually resurface.  My understanding is that Rihanna herself didn’t seek/wasn’t interested in professional help which probably is a large contributor to why she’s acting the way she is with regard to her personal life.

This shit! Someone’s using a photo of Rihanna to talk about domestic abuse in a bookstore, Demi and I had passed the other day. Did Rih approve this? I doubt it? Why does a WOC have to be the poster child for abuse? Why is her battered face an advertisement? This is sick to me.
But if women think its subversive let me know.

No I think its careless to have this posted up like that. It is insensitive.
Rihanna probably walks NY streets from time to time. I wouldn’t want to see my face posted up like this, I wouldn’t want a random reminder of that.

This is fucking disgusting. The only time the abuse of WOC is relevant is to further some other fucking agenda. WTF. Rihanna still has to put up with this? Ugh.

Oh, wow — I mean, as if she hasn’t said before how uncomfortable she is with those photos being made public? You can’t even respect her wish for privacy on something so horrible? I mean, to really go out of your way to use HER face of all faces to showcase your anti-domestic violence stance is just shameful and poor advertising/marketing skills, not to mention racist as hell.

this breaks my fucking heart.
i can’t imagine having my abuse plastered on posters all over the country. i just can’t fucking imagine it.

You can’t just use someone’s story of abuse for your own gain…

Cool, interesting, somewhat depressing but inspiring.

My amazing high school teacher, Mr. Robert Miller (or Mr. Miller as I called him) passed away last week. I was shocked to hear of the news. I was lucky enough to be able to attend an art “magnet” school. The school focuses on several areas spanning the arts, from culinary to visual and even cosmetology. I was in visual arts, and in the visual arts you could narrow it down further to a few main classes in your senior levels. I wanted to focus in on the exciting new world of digital art. It was pretty new back then, and the rest of the art magnet pretty much thought it wasn’t real art, and it wasn’t taken seriously. Though all of us in the class thought it was pretty special, and years later I’m sure most of the artists scoffing at the digital class regrets not having learned the information sooner as it became more and more accepted as an art form. The class was called “multimedia”, and it spanned several areas of digital creation: from graphic design, to digital illustration, to photo manipulation, etc. I really was lucky to have that kind of exposure to that stuff in highschool. It seems silly, since it’s pretty standard now, and I feel really old saying this, but back then it wasn’t so common!
Anyway, Mr. Miller was great. He taught us about website design-it was all flash back then baby! Haha! But he was teaching us real world, practical stuff that became immensely useful later on. I’m not sure where I would honestly be right now if I hadn’t fallen in love with the digital medium through his teaching. I use a computer at my job as a concept artist for an animation studio every single day-it is my main medium and I love it. I really have to thank Mr. Miller for that. He was also a joking around type of teacher, and I really looked up to him. He did freelance covers for stuff like the Rennaisance Festival, come on! I remember thinking that was so cool!
One time I sort of dozed off in class ( I was really out of it, I’m still not sure what I was doing) and I kind of…slipped off my chair. Everyone got quiet, and Mr. Miller was cracking up. He sort of chuckled out an “are you ok” but it was obvious he was trying to hold back that laughter. The rest of the class burst out laughing. I was so embarrassed being the shy kid that I was, but I will always remember that! He also put on this hilarious rap type song in the studio one day. My friend and I would make fun of him, but we knew he was a giant joker!
Anyway, my point that I would like to send out into the cosmos of the internet, is that Mr. Miller was a great and amazing person. I really hope he knows how much he effected all of the kids he taught and inspired and prepared for the real world with art as a career. Teachers are amazing. I hope you are in a better place, Mr. Miller.
His site is still up. It’s a daily painting blog, completely different from anything he taught us in class, but showing how a strong base in the observational art is critical in any art based career. http://www.robertmillerart.com/
